How Bloomingo fits together

Bloomingo is a calendar where every day is a whiteboard. You put things on boards, and one thing can sit on several boards at once. Bloomingo does the tidying, so there’s no system to build before you start.

Each date on the calendar has a board. Bloomingo opens on today’s, and the month at the bottom of the sidebar opens any other.

  • Today and the days ahead open with an empty My tasks list until you use them. It holds the tasks you put on that day.
  • Days gone by stay as you left them, and you can still change them. Nothing turns red when a day doesn’t go to plan.
  • Your day ends when you say. With Your day ends at set to 2:00 AM in Settings, a task you add at 1:30 AM still belongs to the day before.

There is no week view and no list view. Each day is a board, and the timeline beside it shows the day’s hours. See Day boards.

A board is an endless canvas. Bloomingo has four kinds:

Kind What it is
Day board One for every date.
Braindump The one board with no date, for thoughts that have no day or place yet.
Board A board inside another board. It shows there as a card with a live preview of its own.
Project A board you keep on the Projects page.

Boards go inside boards as deep as you need. Above a board’s name, the boards it lives in show as a trail you can click to go back. See Boards inside boards and The braindump.

Everything you put on a board is a node:

  • tasks, on their own or in task lists;
  • notes, which open in the side panel for longer writing;
  • sticky notes, clocks, tables, pictures, PDFs and web links;
  • boards, shown as cards;
  • text, shapes, drawings and the lines that link one thing to another.

A section is a named area on a board that keeps the nodes in it together. Move the section, and they move with it. You add nodes from the toolbox at the bottom of every board. See Adding things.

A node can sit on several boards at once. It is the same node on each, not a copy. Change it or tick it in one place, and it changes everywhere.

That’s how a task can be on its project and on today. Tick it on today, and it’s done on the project too.

  • Also show on, in a node’s menu, puts it on another day or board as well.
  • Add to Today (⇧⌘DCtrl+Shift+D) puts it on today. A task joins today’s My tasks.
  • A node on more than one board says so in its footer, such as “On 3 boards”. A task names the other board beside it.
  • Remove from this board (⌫Backspace) takes it off this board only. Delete everywhere takes it off every board and sends it to Trash.

See One thing, many places.

Two lists side by side. Left, today's My tasks, where First draft: 4,000 words is marked Thesis with the layers mark. Right, the Chapter 3 list on the Thesis board, where the same task is marked Thursday 15 October with the same mark.

A project is a board for something that takes more than a day. Make one with New project on the Projects page, or choose Move to Projects in any board’s options (⋯). The board stays where it was, and the Projects page lists it too.

To work on a project on a certain day, choose Put on a day in its options. It shows on that day as a card. You can also put single tasks from it on a day, and they stay on the project as well. See Projects.

You decide what things mean and where they sit. Bloomingo does the chores around them:

  • Each new day opens with My tasks ready, so there’s no template to choose.
  • New things land in sensible places. A task put on a day joins the end of its My tasks. Something shown on another board lands beside what’s already there. Thoughts sent to the braindump line up in a loose grid.
  • Done tasks move below the open ones the next time you open their board.
  • On a new day, yesterday’s unfinished tasks wait in a small tray. Nothing moves until you choose.
  • Thoughts you haven’t opened for weeks fade on the braindump. Nothing is deleted for you.
  • A section grows to fit what you put in it.
  • Search, with ⌘KCtrl+K, finds any day, board, note, task or file and takes you to it.

The sidebar on the left has a row for each place:

  • Search opens the command menu.
  • Today opens the day board. When another day is open, the row shows that day’s date instead.
  • Braindump, Notes, Projects and Files open their own places. Notes lists every note, wherever it lives. Files lists every picture and PDF on your boards.
  • Pinned and Recent hold the days, boards and notes you come back to.
  • Trash keeps deleted boards, notes, tasks and files for 30 days. Settings is under it, and the month is at the very bottom.

Bloomingo works offline, and your boards live on your device. See Your data and privacy, or the boards feature page for more about boards and projects.
