Search and the command menu

The command menu finds anything in Bloomingo and runs any action, from one box. Press ⌘KCtrl+K, type a few words, and press ↵Enter to open what you found.

  • Click Search at the top of the sidebar.
  • Press ⌘KCtrl+K anywhere, even while you type. Press it again to close the menu.
  • Press // when you aren’t typing.
  • On a Mac, choose Edit › Search in the menu bar.

It opens in the middle of the window, with the field “Type a command or search”.

New tab opens the same menu, with the field “Search to open in a new tab”. What you choose there opens in a new tab. Tabs and windows has more.

With nothing typed, the menu shows two groups.

  • Recent: the last five days, boards and notes you opened on this device, the newest first. The braindump and boards opened in the side panel count too. What is showing now is left out.
  • Actions: two or three for where you are. On a day: New task and New note there, then Go to Today (on today, Go to the next day). On the braindump: New note, New task list and Go to Today. On any other board: New note, New task list and New board. On Projects: New project and Go to Today. On the other pages: Go to Today and Go to Braindump.
The command menu open over today's board, listing Recent boards and days, then Actions: New task today, New note today and Go to the next day.

Type a few words. Search looks through:

  • boards and sections, by their names;
  • notes, by their titles and their text;
  • everything else on a board, by its title or its words, and tables by their cells;
  • tasks, by their words, their notes and their checklist steps;
  • pictures and PDFs, by their names and captions.

Each word you type must start a word in what you’re looking for. Capitals and accents don’t matter, so “pric caf” finds “Pricing at the café”. In Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other languages written without spaces, what you type is found anywhere in the text.

Results come in groups, in this order: Days and boards, Notes and tasks, Files and Actions. Up to ten of each kind show, and a match in a title comes before a match in the text. Each result says where it lives, such as “Launch › Landing page”, or “Project” for a project on no board.

Things in the Trash aren’t found. A task you let go is still found: opening it shows “You let this task go.” with Bring back to today.

When nothing matches, the menu says so: “No matches for “pricing”. Try fewer words, or check the spelling.”

The command menu with “launch” typed, showing a section under Days and boards, then a task list, a task, a clock and a note under Notes and tasks.

Type a date, and that day comes first. These all work:

  • today, tomorrow or yesterday;
  • a weekday: “fri” is the coming Friday, counting today; “next friday” leaves today out; “last friday” is the one before today;
  • a day and a month, either way round: “3 oct”, “October 3rd”, “3 October 2026”. Without a year, it is the nearest such date;
  • a date written as 2026-10-03.

Three letters are enough for a day’s name (“tom”, “fri”). Month and weekday names also work in your computer’s language. Type “braindump” to find the braindump.

⌘↵Ctrl+Enter Open a note in the side panel, over what shows
⇧↵Shift+Enter Open a day, a board or a note in a new tab
EscEsc, ⌘KCtrl+K, or a click outside Close the menu

A day or a board opens in place. For anything on a board, its board opens and moves to show it, selected. If that board is open in a window of its own, that window comes forward. A note or a file that is on no board opens in the side panel.

Actions start with a verb and say where they act: “New task today”, “New note in Launch”. An action shows only where it can run. Type part of its name to find it. “preferences” also finds Go to Settings, “appearance” the themes, and “help” Show keyboard shortcuts. When your first word starts an action’s name, such as “new” or “zoom”, actions come first.

On a board means on a day, on the braindump, or on any other board.
