Yesterday's unfinished tasks

When a new day starts, the tasks you didn’t finish on earlier days wait for you in a tray on today’s board. Nothing moves until you choose, and letting a task go is always one of the choices.

The first time you open today on this device, the tray opens by itself under today’s title, if any tasks are left over. A task is left over when it is still open in a list on an earlier day, and isn’t already on today or a later day. Done tasks, tasks you let go, and tasks that live only on the braindump or other boards are never left over.

When a day ends is up to you: Your day ends at in Settings.

The tray under today's title, reading 3 left from earlier days, with Today, Braindump, Pick a day and Let go for each task, and Decide later and Keep all for today at its foot.

The tray’s title says how many there are: “3 left from yesterday”, or “5 left from earlier days” when any is older, or “1 left from an earlier day”. Under it: “Choose what each one does today. Nothing moves until you choose.”

Each row names the task, where else it is (a project, say), and the day it was left on when that was before yesterday. A task left open on several earlier days is one row.

Each row has four choices:

  • Today puts the task at the end of today’s My tasks.
  • Braindump moves it to the braindump, where it waits as a task card: “Moved to Braindump.”
  • Pick a day opens the month. Today and later days can be chosen; earlier days show but can’t be. You’ll see “Put on Friday, 9 October.”
  • Let go takes it out of its list: “Let go.” It isn’t deleted, and you can bring it back.

At the foot of the tray:

  • Keep all for today puts every task in the tray on today’s My tasks.
  • Decide later folds the tray.

Each choice is one step. The messages have Undo, and ⌘ZCtrl+Z works too. A task that a project or another board also holds stays there: a choice only moves it off its earlier day.

Decide later, EscEsc, or choosing for the last task folds the tray. It doesn’t open again that day.

The tasks stay on the day they were left on. You can open that day and move any of them yourself, with Put on a day or by dragging. See Putting a task on a day.

The next time a new day starts, the tasks the tray showed you and you didn’t choose for go where the setting below says. Tasks the tray hasn’t shown you yet always come to the tray first.

In Settings, under Days, Leftovers you haven’t decided offers:

  • Back to the braindump, which is where the setting starts: they go to the braindump as task cards.
  • Onto the next day: they go onto today’s My tasks.

This happens by itself as the new day opens, as one step on today’s board, so ⌘ZCtrl+Z there takes it back. See Settings.

A repeating task left open on one of its days is offered only until its next day comes. So an “every day” task is never offered, because today has its own.

  • Its row has Today, Pick a day and Let go, but no Braindump.
  • Today and Pick a day move that day’s repeat.
  • Let go skips that day. The task goes on repeating.
  • The setting doesn’t move it. It is offered again each new day until its next day comes, or until you choose.

A task that repeats some days after it’s done has one open day at a time, and is offered until you choose. See Repeating tasks.

A task you let go is out of sight, not gone. Search finds it: press ⌘KCtrl+K or // and type its words. See Search and commands.

It opens in the side panel with “You let this task go.” Choose Bring back to today to put it at the end of today’s My tasks: “Brought back to Today.” with Undo.

A task you let go that another board also holds stays on that board. It only leaves its earlier days.
