Accessibility in Bloomingo

Everything in Bloomingo works from the keyboard, and it names what you’re on for a screen reader. It follows your system’s setting for less motion, and Settings can make the whole interface bigger.

Press ⌘KCtrl+K to open the command menu. From there you can search everything and go to any day or page. You can also add a task, a note, a task list, a timer, a board, a text, a shape, or an image or PDF to the board you’re on. See Search and commands.

Press ?? on a board, or choose Help in the zoom bar, to see every shortcut. The keyboard shortcuts page lists them all.

  • Focus always shows where you are.
  • EscEsc closes the top layer, such as a menu or a dialog, then clears the selection.
  • When a menu, dialog, picker, the timeline or the side panel closes, focus goes back to what opened it.
  • Single-letter keys only work when you aren’t typing. While you write, every key goes into the text.

A board is one stop as you press TabTab. Inside it, things are in reading order: from the top left to the bottom right, row by row.

  • TabTab enters the board at the selected thing, or at its first thing when none is selected. Pressed again, it leaves the board for the rest of the window.
  • Arrow keysArrow keys select the nearest thing in that direction. It scrolls into view.
  • ↵Enter opens the selected thing. On a task list, it types the list’s title.
  • ⇧F10Shift+F10 opens the thing’s menu. Its Link to links it to another thing on the board, by name.
  • ⌥Arrow keysAlt+Arrow keys nudge the selection, and ⌥⇧Arrow keysShift+Alt+Arrow keys nudge it further.
  • ⌥⌘Arrow keysCtrl+Alt+Arrow keys resize the selected thing, and ⌥⇧⌘Arrow keysCtrl+Shift+Alt+Arrow keys resize it in smaller steps.
  • A tap of SpaceSpace marks the selected task done.

The bar above a selection is one Tab stop too. ←← and →→ move along its buttons, and HomeHome and EndEnd go to its ends.

On the timeline, TabTab reaches each block in turn. SpaceSpace on its check marks it done, and ↵Enter on the block opens it. ⌥↑Alt+↑ and ⌥↓Alt+↓ move it 15 minutes earlier or later, and ⌥⇧↓Shift+Alt+↓ and ⌥⇧↑Shift+Alt+↑ make it 15 minutes longer or shorter.

Bloomingo names each thing on a board by its kind and its title, such as “Task: Call the bank” or “Note: Launch plan”. A board itself is named for its day or its name.

  • Things are read in the board’s reading order, whatever sits on top of what. A section is read as a group, with what is in it read inside it.
  • A drawing is read as one “Drawing”. Links between things are read on the things they join: “Linked to: Task: Call the bank”.
  • When you change day, go to a page or jump to a thing from search, Bloomingo says where you are now.
  • Short messages, such as “Moved to Trash.”, are read as they come, and a failed save is read at once. Press F6F6 to reach the newest message’s button, such as Undo or Try now.
  • In the command menu, each result says its group, and “No matches” is read when nothing matches.

If something doesn’t read well with your screen reader, please tell us at hello@doddle.software.

Bloomingo follows your system’s setting:

  • On a Mac: System Settings › Accessibility › Display › Reduce motion.
  • On Windows: Settings › Accessibility › Visual effects, then turn off Animation effects.

With it on, every movement and fade in Bloomingo happens at once. When you jump to a thing, the board goes straight there, and the ring that marks the thing shows for a moment without fading.

Open Settings, then under Appearance choose an Interface size: Small, Default, Large or Larger. Text, icons and buttons grow together, in every window, at once.

The Appearance section of Settings, with Theme set to Light and Interface size set to Larger.

Zooming a board with ⌘+Ctrl++ and ⌘−Ctrl+− changes only the board. The interface size changes everything around it too.

Choose a Theme under Appearance: Light, Dark or System, which follows your computer. Bloomingo’s colours are chosen to meet WCAG 2.2 AA contrast in both themes, and a status always comes with a word or an icon, never colour alone.

On Windows, Bloomingo follows a contrast theme. Some states show with a fill, such as the page you’re on, a pressed button or a selected thing. In a contrast theme they also get an outline in your theme’s highlight colour.
